Whether there are waves are not, mid summer especially, you can count on the sunny weather and crystal clear water to relax and cool off from the scorching heat.  May as well bring the ole skimboard for a couple slides.  This was a lil something I threw together yesterday from the 30 min session we had.

The Lopez Fam and Tommy Gibney made it to Cali

After a blistering 14 hours of airports, planes, and white vans . We made it too Laguna Beach California "the birth place of Charlie & Ray Whitemore"- said by the wise Thomas Buchanan Gibney. On Day 1 of our cali exploration we woke up too gloomy skies and glassy waves in the 4-5ft range. Rumors of Charlie Whitemore spread around california coastline and was confirmed as he did in fact show up at our hotel room doorstep.  We quickly proceeded to Tortuga Bay, where we found fun wraps in the 2-3ft hawaiian range.  Tommorow morning Alejandro Lopez will be competing in the Victoria World Champs.  STAY TUNED MEH BOI! Final Countdown: Wedge

Last day in Cali, after an amazing wrap session featured in the Ironic I Street post, I shot these waves before dark after packing up and saying our goodbyes. It's always hard to leave when the waves are empty and clean especially at The Wedge. The first sequence of shots are Omar with the no grab and grom Jeremiah Sheldon. Its pretty amazing the people and places you encounter through the sport of skim boarding and I wanna encourage anyone who's passionate about the sport to plan a trip to Laguna Beach, California. Big Ups to our SkimCaribbean Family, Mom, Dad and everyone else who we didn't mention that helped make this trip possible.

Ironic I Street

Usually when you shoot photographs, they tend to make the waves look better than they are. However, today was a different story. After getting some proof, I sprinted home for my board and suit. The flawless offshore breeze, onshore head high tubes and fast water combo had me freaking out throughout the session. One of the best wrap sessions of my life my far! Give Thanks!!!!

Green Eggs n Am: Aliso

This past weekend the Green Eggs n Ams was held in some pretty big Aliso, only allowing whitewash wraps and the occasional sider. Nick lopez did his best but the locals had the sider on lock. With the forecast for the next couple days pretty much the same size, the boys decided to hit the skate park. We sat back and let the locals show us how its done, although there were some fun runs in the people park! Afterwords we did out usually wedge check and this is how it was.

EPIC WEDGE

Pictures are one thing but to see in real life the most epic skim wave in the world ridden by the most elite skimboarders is mind blowing to say the least. My brother and I have been fortunate enough to see this go down just hours ago. These are the memories you hold on to for the rest of your life and we are so thankful that we have had the privilege to experience The Wedge with insane conditions like these. . . Laguna Native Tyler Stanaland seen in the pictures claimed today as one of the biggest most makable Wedge he has ever seen, Give Thanks, Jah is Good!

Island Boys Get A Beatin' Misson

One ting about being a newcomer and learning to ride the Wedge, your going to receive your fair share of poundings. That is if you get a wave. Localism is harsh when its crowded and it is not a pretty sight. Verbal disputes are common and fights are not a rare sight, so you have to pick your waves accordingly. You start out at the back of the line but local pros go whenever they feel it's a good one. Leftovers are the only sider option unless you want to get smaller, meaty wraps at a section named Cylinders, which is known to throw the phattest barrels imaginable. The Lopez Brothers payin' their dues and moving up in the ranks! Yessi!

Green Eggs And Ams

Nicolas Lopez reppin the VI and the Caribbean this weekend in the Green Eggs And Am! Although he did'nt make it to the finals he sure did put on a show for all the spectators and the cameras. We are sure glad to have nick on our team and reppin' us the right way! Big Up yourself my boy!

Cold A Street

Nick and the boys are getting ready for the Green Eggs and Ams contest tomorrow practicing on small but fun boost/barrel sections at the A street, where the first leg of the contest will be held. First swell at Wedge

First swell of the season started with a bang, cylinder had prime launch ramps and wraps. It was inconsistent but fun for half the morning until the swell filled in around 2. When it did, it pumped perfect lil side wash to 6-7 ft heaving connections. Was not worth skimming in my opinion with 8 skimmers and 8 bodyboarders lining up for the sider. There were almost 2 fights, one between bodyboarders and one between a skimmer and bodyboarder. The waves are for everyone to share, no one owns a wave. I got out and decided to take a couple clips until my camera broke.

Caribbean Curiousity

Waves are so so today, so today the only thing I'm going to be skimming is the internet. Barbuda point break, and yes I'm taking bets this is skimmable on smaller days. I have google earthed it, for more rad pictures and videos of surfing down island go to saltydays.com!

North of A, what a good day

Yesterday, nice direction NW swell pumps across Newport beaches, flattening and producing perfect yet unreachable skim. Although there was one section of the beach with a patch to run, it was not all that great compared to the near point break north of the pier.

The Bryan Bro's on ESPN, Way Back When

Big Thanks to the Bryan Bro's who help get skimming to where it's at today!

Yesterday

Yesterday I decided to take it easy and film my good buddy Ryan Fleming. We walked across the street to find small but clean waves. Ryan was stoked someone filmed his session, as you can tell from the edit, nothing but laughs and smiles.

West and Aliso Check

Saturday mornin' was pretty small in Newport again and with Mama Wayz passing through Laguna to run errands, I ceased the opportunity to go and snap a couple pictures. To my surprise it was very fun looking at Aliso which was producing a mini sider! Sunny skies and warm weekend weather greeted only 6 skimmers all day long.
PS. Stay Tuned to see me ride my new board!

Clip of the Day

pass: mov
Travis Williams connecting to a perf lil nugget early thurs morning.

Treasure Island And West

On Thursday, Travis and I took a trip to Laguna and it seemed to be a very good call. West Street was empty and producing clean waist high siders connecting to chest high connections. We skimmed for about 3 hrs until a couple people showed up. After scoring there we were planning on calling it a day but had a feeling to check a fickle lil spot right up the road. Treasure Island had a fun fs liner that pushed into a 1 ft peak. Reminded me of Cinnamon Bay! Sunny, warm weather as usual allowed us to trunk it in the dead of winter. Give Thanks!!!

Skim Flick of the Day

Travis Williams whipped this lil edit together from the last couple swells here in Balboa, enjoy!

Barrelfest at A Street

North of the Pier at A street this morning was, as they say in California, fun. The standard for fun skim back home has made today on a scale of 1 to 1o a 12. Consistently crappy conditions back home also allows to truly appreciate every opportunity the Cali coastline offers. This morning was all about the classic wrap to barrel. Big ups to Travis who got out the water for 5 minutes to grab a sequence of me.

Sicky Sixth Street

Plenty of swell on tap this morning in Newport. 6th street offered 3-4ft wrap barrels along with fun liners. 80 degree weather, good friends and plenty of waves to share made it priceless. These are the days I live for, give thanks to God! May there be plenty more of these before I go to heaven.

Huntington HUH?

Huntington Beach known for its super fun surf may also surprise you with fun skim! At an undisclosed location, we were greeted by head high wraps and on the opposite side of this small jetty, a mini pointbreak! Unfortunately the sand was not set up as well as it could have, we made the best of it. Good call with this swell direction, back in Newport it is as flat as Magens Bay in the summer.

Monday, February 20, 2012

Offshores Across The Street

Thurs Feb 16th, The wind was swirling in all directions until all of Newport got a slight drizzle of rain. I stayed inside until I heard the wind starting to literally whip things on our porch. The rain soon died and I sprinted across the street with the camera, I had a feeling as the sun peaked through the clouds. It was getting better by the minute so unfortunately the high quality shots were only of naked waves. We were blessed enough to have someone with a GoPro in the water as well as Travis on my video cam. We got shacked at perfect lil G street for until the wind almost blew all the waves away.

Camels N liners: Clip of the Day

Not the best waves but it gives you an idea of what it was like. Later on in the sesh I pulled into one of the best waves of my life, standing up in a giant cavern.

Camels N liners

Ale and Travis cruised down to Laguna chasing a phat North West swell that was not quite hitting Newport right. The boys were ecstatic to find rideable waves having seen the pumping swell further south. Camels was the place to be offering a combination of incredibly fast water, enormous wraps and not another skimmer in sight. The following day was a bit more relaxed in Newport with fun liners with a few groms. Stay Tuned. . .

Wonderful Wedge

Yesterday's rainy weather kept Newport grom Travis Williams and I cooped up inside hoping for tomorrows forecast of sunny, west swell to be true. We were unpleasantly surprised to find unreachable skim on the highest tide for our west swell spots. We then cruised to give wedge a look which was actually pushing some waist high siders! We generously traded off siders for an hour before the tide took a turn for the worse.

Blissful Balboa

Stereotypical California winter consists of rainy, miserably cold and inconsistent sun but this has turned out to be a pristine winter thus far. Sunny, warm, and trunkable even for a caribbean boy like myself, on my first day, is saying somethin'! I have only been here for three days but have already seen a session that I will never forget. West Street turned on producing waist high siders connecting into perfect overhead peaks and had shredders Blair, Morgan, BCS, Paulo, Sam and many others. No pictures but thisismov.com will be featuring a mini movie soon! Search your couch for quarters and pay the two bucks for a month by month subscription to over 100 mind blowing videos! The swell is slightly missing Newport but I was able to click a couple pics of 6th Street before going out. Stay Tuned! . . .

Good Times

The Boys messed around at Magen's Bay one evening and Paps took some classic shots, Thanks Paps :). Small warm waves with your family, doesn't get muchhh better than that. Alejandro's soaking it all in before he departs to Cold California on the thurs.
